I took these pictures about two weeks ago now. Spring has truly arrived now. I’ve made kind of a “springtime resolution” to spend more time outside this year. The fresh air and sunshine really boosts my spirits. I’ve been trying to help my mom with the garden. We even started a new vegetable garden in the back. But I’m happy just to sit outside and read when I cant do anything else. This next picture is of a Vinca flower from my garden.

On the first weekend in May, my dad and I went to Bicentennial Park in Livonia to take pictures of the trillium, which grow best in the deep woods back on the nature trails. We went right after one of the early spring storms so the trails were basically flooded. But since I cant miss an opportunity for a good picture, I slogged through the fetid mud in my tennis shoes anyway. With all the standing water, the trails really stunk and were swarming in mosquitoes, but it was still totally worth it.

The forest floor looked as though it was blanketed in snow in places where the trillium grew thick. The lighting was beautiful, especially for closeups. As always, I tried to follow the rule of three when searching for the best flowers.

One problem with getting so close to the flowers in the middle of nature is spiders. They are everywhere. I was taking pictures of a beautiful lilac-colored wild geranium when I noticed a that it had a bright green crab spider sitting on it.

I also found this guy in the log I was leaning on.

My favorite shots from that day were of the trillium and the young ferns. I love how the ferns look like seashells or snakes before they are full grown.

While I was kneeling in the mud taking pictures of the ferns, I noticed some red stripes sticking out of the log next to me. I moved the log and found a small American flag. I put it in my camera bag. I figure it will bring me good luck.

My Lucky Flag

After taking way too many pictures, we went back home where I took even more pictures in the garden. It was there that I saw my first coyote (my neighbors keep talking about them, however I had never seen one). Unfortunately it was too far away to get a good picture and my neighbors fence was in the way, but you get the picture.

Hey, not every photograph can be perfect. Hopefully these last few shots will make up for it.

Mandy these photos are amazing! I really don’t know how you do it, every time I try I blur the images =(
